España Graduation Trip

A Web Quest for 8th Grade (Computer and Spanish)
Designed by Karen Conlin

Introduction

Your Great-Aunt Maricela Madrazo, who lives in Madrid, Spain with her sister Josephina, has invited you and a friend to visit them for a week in June as your graduation gift. She will be paying your expenses for air travel, lodging and trips to the museums but needs to know how much it will cost. You will be responsible for transportation around town (taxi, bus etc.), meals and any personal expenses. Remember she is older and you should not take advantage of her money. You may be receiving some money from other relatives that you can use for your expenses but do not even consider first class airfare or hotels.
It would be polite for you to take Great-Aunt Maricela and Josephina out to dinner to thank them for their hospitality.

Task

You need to research airfare roundtrip from the DC area to Madrid a moderately priced hotel near her apartment which is located near the Parque del Retiro, the cost of admission for two museums in Madrid as well as two meals a day. You should also write a letter in Spanish to Great-Aunt Maricela thanking her for her generosity, the cost of airfare and a hotel and when you will be arriving and departing. Great-Aunt Maricela is computer literate and can link to your spreadsheet in the letter you write.
Your expenses need to be shown in an Excel Spreadsheet and your letter written in a text document. Within the document you must link to the spreadsheet.

Process

  1. Collaborate with a classmate on how to break down the research (one can research air fares while the other researches hotels.)
  2. Research airfares from the DC area to and from Madrid, Spain
  3. Research hotels in Madrid and find the cost of a room
  4. Research the costs of admission to two museums and how far it is from your hotel to see if there is a bus, taxi or within walking distance. Get the costs of the transportation you can take.
  5. Find places to eat and the costs, both for your daily bread as well as taking your hostesses out for a meal.
  6. Enter the information on an Excel spreadsheet showing the total costs that will be paid by Great-Aunt Maricela and what you need to pay. There should also be a grand total for the whole trip.
  7. Here is a site that may be helpful as well as this one for air fares. Find the Parque on this map.
  8. Write a letter in Spanish and proper letter format linking the spreadsheet. Some online translators are inaccurate so you must check with your Spanish teacher to make sure it is correct.
  9. The Letter and Spreadsheet formats are found in your assignments
  10. You MUST only use the links I have created as well as the letter and spreadsheet formats.
